Welcome!

Sunday January 6th 2008

Today we’re proud to announce the first preview of the Yahoo! Mobile Widget Platform.

Mobile has always been a hard nut for developers to crack. So many different types of devices, operating systems, and capabilities. How do you cover them all?

Here in the Yahoo! Mobile team we’ve dealt with these problems day and night (literally), trying to build a great mobile product for consumers that addresses all these different challenges. During the development of our mobile products, we’ve built an awesome platform and a language that helps us solve a lot of the traditional mobile developer problems. Now we are opening it up for all developers.

This is a huge deal. Anyone will be able to write a Snippet or Widget and deploy it across hundreds of phones, potentially reaching millions of customers you never could before. We take care of the hard part and let you focus on what you do best: content.

The new Blueprint language (currently in preview form) allows developers to start building mobile widgets easily and quickly using straightforward XML. You can also build a simple mobile widget with RSS Instead of Blueprint if you like.

To be fair though, you won’t be writing any first-person shooters or 3D cube effects with this language (at least not yet). Our goal in this first release was breadth, not depth. We wanted to make sure developers could get onto the most devices possible. As we move forward, devices will get more powerful and the baseline will get higher. As this happens we’ll also start to increase our depth.

This stage of our platform and language is just the beginning. We already have our roadmap planned out. While this first release relies on developers to serve their Snippets and Widgets remotely, the next generation will run directly on the device and get at the more powerful features of today’s cool new phones.

Not only do developers benefit from this platform, but so do users. Users are able to customize and personalize their Yahoo! mobile experience with your Widgets. We’re leveling the mobile playing field by giving all developers and publishers equal access to our large audience of Yahoo! mobile users, so the only thing you need to worry about is building a mobile widget users will want to keep on their device.

In the coming months we’ll be releasing many more exciting tools for developers to create even more powerful and innovative mobile widgets. This blog will be the go-to place to learn about new developments as well as tips and tricks on how to build Snippets and Widgets.

We will also be establishing a forum to allow you to connect with other developers using the platform, as well as some of the engineers that created it.

We will soon open up the floodgates to allow you to start creating, testing, and submitting your creations to our Gallery. We’re moving fast and furious to get this stuff to you, so there might be a few speed bumps and hiccups along the way. We apologize in advance, but trust us, the end result will be well worth it.

Congrats on 3.0 - looks promising. I really like your mobile widget idea - will be reviewing your documentation and trying things out shortly.

On a side note I tried to download Go 3.0 to my Nokia N95 8GB but the WAP download page only allows me to download Go 2.0 because “Yahoo! Go 3.0 Beta is not available for my phone”. However on this page (http://mobile.yahoo.com/go/phones) it says it’s supported. Any idea on when 3.0 will be supported on the N95 8GB?

  2. Ed Says:

The N95 is definitely a supported phone. I have it running on my N95-3 right now. I believe it should be ready for download sometime today.

  3. NP Says:

Again the Nokia E-Series is left in the dark…. Not available for the e61.

The “G” guys seem to always have native Symbian apps ready for nearly all phones everytime they release. Yahoo! has yet to ever release on time. By the time you will release V4 beta will be ready.

This doesn’t bode well for Yahoo!’s mobile efforts.

  4. Simon Griffiths Says:

Well done, it is a hard job getting the word out there about a mobile site. Google doesn’t seem to be doing a good job of this either so taking the bull by the horns and using a widget approach might help to get some control from the carriers, and help developers to market their sites/widgets.

  5. Thorleif Wiik Says:

Looks great. Anyone working on a netbeans IDE developer plugin?

  6. Steve Says:

Sounds so great! Waiting for the doors open to developers.

  7. Pradeep Peethambaram Says:

On the compatibility list, we have seen ASUS products. Isn’t it possible to extend support for the Dell Axim range also? It would be great since there are a lot of users.

  8. Rajeshwar Mothe Says:

    Cool .. Great Work,

Is there any possibility of Extending it to 3GSM Mobile? I would be grate if you give me a bit of hint on this.

  9. Rajeshwar Mothe Says:

    Hi all,

Is there any mailing list or Yahoo Group available to post my technical doubts on this.

  10. Hong Says:

I have Nokia6555b, but it says not supported. I think 6555 and 6555b have the same OS. Anyway, please let me know if 6555b will be supported. Also, I have SE W580i, it’s not supported either. Though I think W580i and W910i have very similar OS versions. Anyway, I got it working on my N75. Good stuff :)

PS: can’t wait to see how to test and publish my mobile widgets…

  11. James Dean Says:

How much control over the UI can one have over their widget. When is the test bed going to be ready and when would you have an Asynchronous Data Example ?

  12. Ed Says:

Test submission will be open in a few weeks.

  13. Brad Says:

It looks like location awareness will be supported. Please confirm if Geo-Position will return the user’s lat/long (per user preferences and privacy). That would open the door to many useful mobile widgets, imho. Can you provide any more info as to when this will be provided? Will it be supported for all carriers?

    Thanks!

  14. Sue Tagseth Says:

Is there any plan to make this not device-speicific and rather OS-specific? It would tremendously popularize the product instead of users fumbling through a compatibility check always. Great product!

  15. Ed Says:

@Brad: We might have to remove the location headers from this first phase of the language as we don’t yet have privacy controls in place. But in theory, yes, it would give you lat/lon. It might be that this feature may not show up until we get on-device Widgets working in the second phase of the language. We actually have a lot of very cool location-related features in the works that won’t come to pass until that second phase anyway.

@Sue: We can certainly consider adding an OS limitation. But in theory we shouldn’t really need one as we tend to fall back gracefully on each device we support.

  16. Brad Says:

Thanks. Any ETA on the second phase? How can we participate? (we have a very cool location-related offer)

  17. Gary Says:

Can I use the widget to build / develop a web site for the .mobi domain I registered for my business?

  18. Joyce Says:

I hope to have a TEST location here in the UAE. Thanks

  19. curious1 Says:

Does this work on Motorola devices - motorola Q family devices. It would be really cool if it does !!!

  20. Sue Tagseth Says:

Thanks Ed for the response Yes, fall back gracefully on each device is nice. But let me put it this way, # of devices vs. # of OS’, which means thousands vs. tens, and getting apps to work on the former is a challenge. My opinion - restricting application development to certain models of devices is a boo boo - the best alternative is to have a stack on the OS that takes care of all devices - good or bad, large or small, phone or PC, WM5 or WM6, whatever. Not trying to compare with Android or anything else out there, its just my opinion.

  21. Anthony Sanger Says:

I am still an amateur;however, in theory everything seems simple and forthright. Give me a couple of days to intergrate smooth practice.

  25. Shailesh Says:

want to download go 3.0 on my Nokia N73 music edition. I am in India and my service provider is Vodafone. After download it says “No valid certificate” and after that aborts. What does that mean.

Please help to get this done
